This reality presents a great opportunity for countries with good health facilities and companies that promote health Tourism to take advantage of this business worth hundreds of millions of dollars. Nigeria the biggest exporter of petroleum in Africa has a population of 168 million people with Annual GDP of over $300 billion and a willing to travel population.

South African Tourism says
"We found out that there is a growing middle class in Nigeria, a double-digit growth in the middle to high income earners."
Other statistics that help in making decisions on marketing South Africa as a destination to Nigeria include the fact that there are 94, million mobile internet users, the largest in Africa - mobile penetration has grown by 64% over a 10 year period and the fact that a large portion of money is unbanked.
Other factors include the fact that the US and the UK are the two leading destinations for Nigerians, with South Africa catching up fast and that 58% of Anglophone arrivals in South Africa are from Nigeria. "We estimate that 6.4 million Nigerians are available for travel," SA Tourism believes.
It was also revealed that though Nigerians travel all year round, there is a spike in arrivals during the last quarter of the year. Average stay is seven days with the typical traveller being over 40, married or is travelling alone. Budget travellers account for 22% of arrivals, upwardly mobile professionals 23%, and young aspirants 35%.
SA Tourism has also homed in on what the Nigerian traveller wants. "Nigerians value shopping and nightlife; they are looking for relaxation and also seek cultural and political history. Seventy percent of Nigerians want flexible, customised packages, are very keen on shopping and want to be close to restaurants and malls”.
